Recently, at our debut Las Vegas Market, we had the opportunity to sit down with Becki Owens and chat a bit. As you may know, Hudson Valley Lighting has had the pleasure of creating a small collection with Becki which showcases her light and airy, artfully oversized Californian aesthetic. Becki came out to support her collection and meet fans and admirers.
Read on to hear what Becki had to say to these nine questions about design, style, lighting, and life.
1. Lighting comes in many forms. What's so pleasing and lasting about the lantern?
Lanterns are timeless. They’re so versatile and the shapes just keep getting better and better—they keep evolving with the trends so I think they’ll be around forever.
2. What does woven rattan add to a space?
I love rattan—it adds so much texture, and it can add something a little different and unexpected to a modern space. It can also add something special to a bohemian or transitional space.

3. If someone's unsure about what size chandelier to put in their space, is it better to lean larger or smaller? Why?
I tend to go larger! I like statement lighting, and as long as it doesn’t overwhelm the space, I think you can always get away with a more substantial piece… as long as you don’t hit your head on it!
4. What's a recent development in lighting trends that excites you?
I like the woven pieces, and the gold, black, and white! White fixtures are nice when you mix them with gold or black accents.
5. Is there a place people don't usually think to put a light that both looks great and makes sense from an interior décor perspective?
I love when it’s unexpected—somewhere like a built-in, on top of a bookshelf, or on either side of a bookshelf. I think it adds something special and interesting to the space. If you feel like the space could use something, it could probably use lighting!

6. Can anyone add some “SoCal flavor” to their place? How?
Adding jute or rattan really adds that “beachy” feeling that we love in California. You can mix beachy with modern, or really any style that speaks to you.
7. What do you to stay inspired?
I look at other people’s work sometimes, but I try not to get caught up in it. I want to come up with something totally fresh and unique. I try to step outside of my creative comfort zone and I often find inspiration from there!
8. You run an interior design business, a lifestyle blog, a wildly popular Instagram account, and a personal brand. What do you do to recharge?
I spend a lot of time with my family, and we hang out on the beach—we go at night a lot to watch the sunset and have dinner on the beach.
9. How does it feel when you complete a project with a client and they've opted to use Ivy, Ren, and/or Richie, and you see one of your HVL lights installed in a beautiful space you've designed?
It feels great! It makes me feel like I’ve made a difference in the space—it feels complete, and makes me feel like I’ve played a part in something that someone else will love and enjoy spending time in.
